Overview

Botulinum toxin A + liraglutide is a combination therapy used for obesity management. This approach combines intragastric injection of botulinum toxin A with subcutaneous liraglutide administration. Botulinum toxin A works by inhibiting acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions when injected into the gastric wall, causing temporary muscle paralysis that slows gastric emptying and creates an earlier sensation of fullness. Typically, 500 units of BTA are diluted and injected into multiple sites in the stomach wall, including the antrum, fundus, pyloric ring, or other gastric regions. Liraglutide, an incretin mimetic, helps the pancreas release appropriate insulin amounts when blood sugar levels are high, slows stomach emptying, and may decrease appetite. The standard dosing protocol begins with 0.6 mg daily for one week, then increases to 1.2 mg daily. Clinical studies have shown that this combination provides more effective weight loss than BTA alone, with comparable safety profiles.
