Overview

Botulinum toxin type A antitoxin is a therapeutic agent composed of neutralizing antibodies (or antibody fragments) specifically directed against the neurotoxin produced by *Clostridium botulinum* type A. It is primarily used to treat botulism, a life-threatening paralytic illness, by binding to and neutralizing the toxin circulating in the blood before it can bind to and enter the presynaptic nerve terminals at the neuromuscular junction. In clinical practice, particularly in the United States, it is most commonly administered as a component of the Heptavalent Botulism Antitoxin (HBAT), which is an equine-derived product containing F(ab')2 and Fab fragments against botulinum toxin types A through G. Early administration is critical to prevent the progression of respiratory failure and other neurological symptoms.
