Bovaer is a feed additive developed to reduce methane emissions from ruminant animals such as cattle. Its active ingredient is 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP), which acts by inhibiting the enzyme methyl coenzyme M reductase (MCR) in the rumen microbiota. This enzyme catalyzes the final step of methane synthesis during digestion. By blocking this enzymatic activity, Bovaer significantly reduces enteric methane production—studies report reductions of approximately 30% for dairy cows and even higher percentages for beef cattle, depending on diet and dosage[2][5][7][8]. The product has been extensively tested in over 50 peer-reviewed studies and more than 48 on-farm trials across multiple countries. It is metabolized rapidly within the cow’s digestive system and does not transfer into milk or meat products[3][9]. Developed initially by dsm-firmenich (formerly DSM), it is now also manufactured and marketed through a strategic alliance with Elanco Animal Health in North America[6][7][8].
