Bovine anti-cryptosporidium immunoglobulin is a polyclonal antibody preparation derived from the colostrum of cows hyperimmunized with Cryptosporidium antigens. It contains elevated levels of immunoglobulins, primarily IgG, specific for Cryptosporidium parvum. The mechanism of action involves antibody binding to Cryptosporidium oocysts, neutralizing the pathogen, and reducing its ability to infect enterocytes, thereby limiting the severity and duration of cryptosporidiosis. The product has been investigated for prophylactic and therapeutic use in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised populations (e.g., HIV/AIDS), with studies showing reductions in oocyst shedding and diarrheal symptoms. Efficacy is typically observed when the preparation is administered orally.
