Overview

Bovine atelocollagen is a biologic soft tissue filler derived from bovine Type I collagen. It is produced through enzymatic (protease) degradation to remove the telopeptide regions from the ends of the collagen molecule, which significantly reduces its antigenicity compared to native collagen. Historically marketed under the brand names **ZYDERM** (available in 35 mg/mL and 65 mg/mL concentrations) and **ZYPLAST** (a cross-linked form using glutaraldehyde), it was the first injectable filler approved by the FDA for the correction of dermal defects such as wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and other cosmetic tissue augmentations. The material acts as a structural scaffold within the extracellular matrix, providing mechanical support and volume. However, its longevity is limited to approximately 4 to 6 months due to host degradation, and its use was associated with the development of anti-bovine antibodies in a high percentage of patients.
