Overview

Bovine enoxaparin is a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) derived from bovine (cattle) intestinal mucosa, currently under development by Heptech. It is designed as a non-porcine alternative to standard enoxaparin, which is traditionally sourced from porcine (pig) tissues. The development of bovine-derived LMWH aims to address global supply chain vulnerabilities and mitigate shortages of porcine heparin, while also providing a therapeutic option for patients who avoid porcine products due to religious or cultural reasons. Mechanistically, bovine enoxaparin functions as an anticoagulant by binding to and accelerating the activity of antithrombin III, which in turn inhibits prothrombotic enzymes, primarily Factor Xa and, to a lesser extent, Factor IIa (thrombin). The program is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
