Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bovine heparin sodium is a biological active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) developed by Hebei Changshan Kaijiejian Biopharmaceutical for use as an anticoagulant. As a glycosaminoglycan derived from bovine tissues, it functions by binding to and accelerating the activity of antithrombin III (ATIII). This complex then inactivates several activated coagulation factors, most notably thrombin (Factor IIa) and Factor Xa, thereby preventing the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin and inhibiting clot formation. While porcine-derived heparin is the global standard, bovine heparin serves as a critical alternative to ensure supply chain resilience and to accommodate specific cultural or religious requirements. The product is currently in the preclinical development stage as a pharmaceutical raw material.
