Overview

Bovine hyaluronidase alfa is a recombinant form of the bovine hyaluronidase enzyme developed by Bristol Myers Squibb. It serves as a spreading agent designed to facilitate the subcutaneous administration of large-volume biologics. The enzyme functions as a glycosaminoglycan-specific endoglycosidase that temporarily and reversibly degrades hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid) in the subcutaneous extracellular matrix. This degradation reduces the viscosity of the interstitial gel, thereby increasing the permeability of the tissue and allowing for the enhanced dispersion and systemic absorption of co-administered therapeutics. Bovine hyaluronidase alfa has been primarily investigated in clinical trials as part of a subcutaneous formulation of elotuzumab (Empliciti) for the treatment of multiple myeloma, offering a more convenient administration route compared to standard intravenous infusion.
