Overview

Bovine intestinal alkaline phosphatase (bIAP) is a dimeric, membrane-derived glycoprotein enzyme derived from the intestinal mucosa of cattle. It hydrolyzes various phosphate esters at an optimal alkaline pH and plays a key role in detoxifying lipopolysaccharides (LPS) by dephosphorylation, thereby reducing inflammation and improving survival in models of sepsis and acute inflammatory conditions. Its mechanism involves inhibition of endotoxin activity and modulation of inflammatory responses through dephosphorylation of microbial ligands such as LPS. It has been developed primarily for use in acute inflammatory conditions including systemic inflammatory response syndrome, ischemia-reperfusion injury, burns, respiratory insufficiency, and post-cardiac surgery organ injury[3][6][4]. The enzyme is also being explored for its hepatoprotective effects.
