Overview

Bovine lactoferrin is an iron-binding multifunctional glycoprotein derived from cow's milk, belonging to the transferrin family. It is present in high concentrations in colostrum and breast milk. Bovine lactoferrin exhibits a range of biological activities, including antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and antitumor effects. Its mechanism of action involves binding iron ions (limiting their availability to pathogens), modulating immune responses by linking innate and adaptive immunity, and exerting direct effects on microbial membranes. Bovine lactoferrin is used as a dietary supplement for its potential health benefits such as supporting immune function and preventing infections; it has also been investigated for use in conditions like hepatitis C and Helicobacter pylori infection. The US FDA recognizes it as generally regarded as safe (GRAS) for use as a food additive[1][3][4][8].
