Overview

Bovine somatotropin (bST), also known as bovine growth hormone (BGH), is a peptide hormone naturally produced by the pituitary glands of cattle. The recombinant version, rbST (sometribove), is a genetically engineered biologic drug used in the dairy industry to enhance milk production in lactating cows. It works by binding to growth hormone receptors, which stimulates the production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and redirects nutrients from body fat and other tissues toward the mammary glands for milk synthesis. Originally developed by Monsanto and approved by the FDA in 1993, the commercial formulation Posilac (sometribove zinc suspension) is administered via subcutaneous injection every 14 days. While it can increase milk yield by 10-15%, its use remains controversial and is prohibited in the European Union, Canada, and several other countries due to animal welfare concerns, including increased risks of mastitis and lameness.
