Overview

Bovine thrombin is a serine protease enzyme derived from the plasma of cattle. It is used as a topical hemostatic agent to aid in the control of minor bleeding during surgical procedures when standard techniques such as suture, ligature, or cautery are ineffective or impractical. Bovine thrombin acts by converting fibrinogen to fibrin and activating factor XIII, thereby promoting clot formation at the site of application. Its primary indication is for hemostasis in accessible capillaries and small venules during surgery. The drug may be used alone or with absorbable gelatin sponges for enhanced effect. Bovine thrombin's mechanism mirrors that of endogenous human thrombin but carries risks such as antibody development against bovine proteins and potential cross-reactivity with human coagulation factors[1][2][3][4][5][8].
