Overview

Bovine type II collagen is a protein derived from the articular cartilage of cows. It is a fibrillar form of collagen primarily found in cartilage tissue and plays a crucial role in providing tensile strength and resistance to shearing forces within joints. As a supplement or research reagent, it is used for its potential benefits in joint health—particularly osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis—by supporting cartilage structure or modulating immune responses. Mechanistically, undenatured (native) type II collagen may induce oral tolerance by promoting regulatory T cell formation that suppresses joint inflammation; hydrolyzed forms may provide amino acids for tissue repair[5][6]. Bovine type II collagen is also widely used as an immunogen in animal models to induce arthritis for research purposes[5]. Clinical evidence suggests possible symptom relief in osteoarthritis and some improvement in rheumatoid arthritis symptoms; however, results are mixed and more studies are needed[1][4][6].
