Overview

Bovis Calculus Sativus (BCS), also known as cultivated bovine bezoar, is a compound medication developed to mimic the pharmacological properties of natural bovine bezoar. It is produced by enriching fresh bovine bile with key components including deoxycholic acid, cholic acid, and composite calcium bilirubin, and is further supplemented with various trace elements and amino acids. In traditional Chinese medicine, it has a long history of use for treating consciousness disorders. BCS is currently being investigated for its neuroprotective potential in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Its mechanism of action involves multiple pathways, including the mitigation of excitatory amino acid toxicity, reduction of oxidative stress and free radical production, and inhibition of cascading inflammatory responses. By targeting these diverse pathophysiological mechanisms, BCS aims to alleviate impaired consciousness and improve clinical outcomes in patients following an acute cerebral infarction.
