Overview

BP13 is an investigational lytic bacteriophage being developed at the University of Calgary as a component of a bacteriophage cocktail for the treatment of prosthetic joint infections. [3, 4] Specifically, it is part of a two-phage cocktail with another phage, J1P3, that targets methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). [3, 4] Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect and destroy bacteria. [3, 4] This therapy is being evaluated in a single-patient Phase 1/2 clinical trial (NCT06456424) for a patient with a recurrent MSSA prosthetic hip joint infection who has exhausted conventional therapies. [3] The treatment protocol involves a single intra-operative injection into the joint, followed by 14 days of intravenous administration. [3, 4]
