Overview

BPC‑157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide (15 amino acids) originally derived from a protein found in human gastric juice. Its sequence is Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. Preclinical studies suggest that BPC‑157 has cytoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-regenerative properties, promoting healing of skin, muscle, bone, ligaments, tendons, and various organs. Proposed mechanisms include upregulation of growth factors involved in tissue repair and regeneration (such as VEGFR2), modulation of nitric oxide pathways for vascular function and blood flow, antioxidant activity via scavenging reactive oxygen species due to its structure with multiple carboxylic groups, and possible effects on gene expression related to angiogenesis and inflammation. Despite these findings in animal models or cell culture studies—and some use in functional medicine—BPC‑157 is not approved for any medical indication by regulatory agencies. It remains an experimental compound with no published clinical trial data supporting safety or efficacy in humans[1][2][3][5][6][7][8].
