Overview

BPM 31543 is a topical small molecule formulation of calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3) developed by Berg Pharma for the prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA). As a Vitamin D receptor (VDR) agonist, the drug is designed to protect hair follicles from the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapy. The therapeutic mechanism involves modulating the hair follicle cycle, specifically by arresting the anagen (growth) phase, which is the phase most susceptible to damage from chemotherapy agents. BPM 31543 was evaluated in a Phase 1 dose-escalation study at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in adult patients with breast cancer, where it demonstrated safety and initial proof of concept for hair loss prevention.
