Overview

BPV8O is a specific study identifier for an 8 mg dose of intrathecal hyperbaric bupivacaine administered to patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 27.5 kg/m2. This designation was used in a clinical trial conducted by Seoul Medical Center to evaluate the effect of BMI on the median effective dose (ED50) of bupivacaine for spinal anesthesia during total knee replacement arthroplasty. Bupivacaine is a long-acting amide-type local anesthetic that functions by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in the neuronal membrane. This blockade prevents the influx of sodium ions, thereby inhibiting the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses and providing regional anesthesia.
