Overview

BR1 peptide is a synthetic 25-mer peptide derived from the gingipain RgpA cysteine protease of the bacterium *Porphyromonas gingivalis*. It is utilized as a diagnostic biomarker for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and early arthritis, serving as a specific epitope for the humoral immune response. Research suggests that *P. gingivalis* is involved in the pathogenesis of RA, and anti-BR1 antibodies detected via ELISA using this peptide have shown high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of RA. Notably, the anti-BR1 test can identify RA in patients who are seronegative for traditional markers such as rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA). The peptide was developed by researchers at China Medical University and Asia University in Taiwan.
