Overview

BR2251 is an orally available small molecule inhibitor of the urate transporter 1 (URAT1) being developed by BioRay Pharmaceutical for the treatment of primary gout and hyperuricemia. URAT1, encoded by the SLC22A12 gene, is a key transporter located on the apical membrane of proximal renal tubule cells responsible for the reabsorption of filtered uric acid from the urine back into the blood. By inhibiting URAT1, BR2251 increases the renal excretion of uric acid, thereby reducing serum uric acid levels. The drug is currently being evaluated in Phase II clinical trials to determine its efficacy and safety compared to standard-of-care xanthine oxidase inhibitors like febuxostat.
