Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Brain Heart Capsule (Nao Xin Jiao Nang) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospital preparation developed by The First Hospital of Zhejiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of TCM). It is specifically indicated for the treatment of ischemic stroke and related cardiovascular conditions such as coronary heart disease and angina pectoris. The formulation is a combination of several herbal extracts, typically including *Astragalus membranaceus* (Huangqi), *Salvia miltiorrhiza* (Danshen), *Ligusticum chuanxiong* (Chuanxiong), and *Carthamus tinctorius* (Honghua). Pharmacologically, the capsule is designed to "tonify Qi and activate blood circulation," which translates to improving cerebral microcirculation, reducing blood viscosity, and inhibiting platelet aggregation. Research suggests it exerts neuroprotective effects by modulating the balance between vasoconstrictors like endothelin-1 and vasodilators like nitric oxide, while also suppressing inflammatory cytokines and apoptotic pathways in the brain following ischemic injury.
