Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Brazilian green propolis extract, specifically the standardized EPP-AF formulation, is a botanical product derived from the resin collected by honeybees (*Apis mellifera*) from the *Baccharis dracunculifolia* plant in Brazil. It is characterized by a high concentration of bioactive phenolic compounds, most notably artepillin C and various flavonoids. In clinical research, particularly the BeeCovid trials led by the D'Or Institute for Education and Research, it is being evaluated as an adjunct treatment for hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The extract is hypothesized to exert therapeutic effects through immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory mechanisms, potentially mitigating the cytokine storm by inhibiting pathways such as PAK1 and NF-kappaB. Additionally, it has demonstrated potential antiviral properties by interfering with viral entry and replication targets.
