BrBDP-2PTX is a theranostic small molecule conjugate consisting of a brominated boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) core linked to two paclitaxel (PTX) moieties. This near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent compound is designed to self-assemble into stable, uniform spherical nanoparticles (BrBDP-2PTX NPs) via nanoprecipitation. The nanoparticles are engineered for enzyme-responsive drug release, specifically showing rapid degradation in the presence of Proteinase K. BrBDP-2PTX functions as a dual-purpose agent: the paclitaxel component provides potent cytotoxicity against tumor cells, such as human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) and liver hepatocellular carcinoma cells, by stabilizing microtubules and inducing cell death, while the brominated BODIPY core enables high-efficiency NIR bioimaging for tumor detection and monitoring. Preclinical studies indicate that the nanoparticles maintain stability in physiological conditions and exhibit minimal systemic toxicity.
