Breta (letrozole) is a potent, nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor developed as a generic pharmaceutical by Dyson Research Laboratories. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer and other estrogen-dependent conditions in postmenopausal women. The drug functions by competitively and reversibly binding to the heme group of the cytochrome P450 subunit of the aromatase enzyme (CYP19A1), which catalyzes the final step in estrogen biosynthesis by converting androgens to estrogens. By significantly lowering systemic estrogen levels, Breta deprives estrogen-sensitive tumor cells of the hormonal stimulation required for proliferation and growth. It is typically administered orally as a once-daily tablet.
