Overview

Brexanolone is a synthetic neuroactive steroid and positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor. It is structurally identical to the endogenous neurosteroid allopregnanolone. Brexanolone is indicated for the treatment of postpartum depression (PPD) in adult women. The drug works by enhancing GABAergic inhibition in the brain, which may help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety associated with PPD. It is administered as a continuous intravenous infusion over 60 hours under medical supervision due to risks such as excessive sedation and sudden loss of consciousness[1][2][7].
