Overview

Brifentanil is a synthetic opioid analgesic belonging to the fentanyl family. It is a potent, short-acting μ-opioid receptor agonist developed for use as an anesthetic adjunct or for pain management during surgical procedures. Like other fentanyl analogs, brifentanil acts primarily by binding to and activating the mu-opioid receptor in the central nervous system, resulting in analgesia, sedation, and respiratory depression. Brifentanil was investigated for its rapid onset and ultra-short duration of action similar to remifentanil; however, it has not been widely marketed or approved for clinical use.
