Brilliant blue G is a synthetic dye used as a disclosing agent in ophthalmic surgery to selectively stain the internal limiting membrane (ILM) of the retina. This selective staining enhances visualization and facilitates surgical removal of the ILM during procedures such as macular hole or epiretinal membrane surgery. The mechanism by which it specifically stains the ILM without affecting other retinal structures is not fully understood. Brilliant blue G is administered intraocularly and removed after use; systemic absorption is minimal. It was approved by the FDA for ophthalmic use in December 2019 under the brand name TissueBlue[2][3][4][8]. In laboratory settings, it is also widely used for protein staining (e.g., Bradford assay) and has been identified as an inhibitor of P2X7 purinoceptor channels[6].
