Brimonidine Drug Delivery System (Brimo DDS) is an investigational, biodegradable intravitreal implant developed by Allergan (an AbbVie company) for the treatment of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. The system utilizes a poly-(D,L-lactide) polymer matrix to provide sustained release of brimonidine tartrate (Generation 1) or brimonidine free base (Generation 2) into the vitreous over several months. Brimonidine is a selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that exhibits neuroprotective properties by activating receptors on retinal neurons, potentially slowing the progression of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor loss. The implant is administered via a proprietary applicator system designed to deliver therapeutic levels of the drug directly to the posterior segment of the eye.
