Brinjal peel extract is a herbal preparation derived from the outer skin of the eggplant (Solanum melongena), commonly known as brinjal. The extract is rich in polyphenols, especially anthocyanins such as delphinidin 3-rutinoside (nasunin), chlorogenic acid, and other phenolic acids and flavonoids[1][4][7][9]. It exhibits potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and cytoprotective activities. Mechanistically, these effects are attributed to its ability to scavenge free radicals and inhibit enzymes like lipoxygenase (LOX), lipase, and α-amylase[1]. Brinjal peel extract has demonstrated cytotoxicity against cancer cells in vitro with less toxicity toward normal cells[2][7], suggesting potential anticancer properties. Clinically, it has been investigated for topical use in treating skin conditions such as arsenical keratosis and Bowen's disease due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions[5]. Traditional uses also include treatment of dermatitis, eczema, warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), sores, infections, psoriasis, sunburns,[3][4] with ongoing research into its broader nutraceutical applications.
