Overview

Britena is a topical triple-combination cream primarily indicated for the short-term treatment of moderate-to-severe melasma of the face. It contains three active pharmacological agents: hydroquinone (4%), tretinoin (0.05%), and fluocinolone acetonide (0.01%). Hydroquinone acts as a depigmenting agent by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, thereby reducing melanin synthesis. Tretinoin, a retinoid, promotes keratinocyte turnover and enhances the penetration of hydroquinone, while fluocinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid, provides anti-inflammatory effects to reduce the irritation typically caused by the other two components. Developed by Hovid, Britena is designed to be used as part of a comprehensive skin-care program that includes sun avoidance and the use of sunscreens.
