Overview

BN021208H is an investigational sustained-release microtablet formulation of brivaracetam, a third-generation antiepileptic drug (AED). Developed by Shandong Bainuo Pharmaceutical and Shandong Langnuo Pharmaceutical, BN021208H is designed for the treatment of epilepsy, specifically focal-onset (partial-onset) seizures. Brivaracetam acts as a highly selective and high-affinity ligand for synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A), a presynaptic transmembrane protein involved in regulating neurotransmitter exocytosis. By binding to SV2A, it modulates synaptic transmission and stabilizes hyperexcitable neuronal activity. As a Class 2.2 improved new drug in China, the sustained-release microtablet formulation aims to provide a more stable plasma concentration, reduce dosing frequency, and minimize peak-related adverse effects such as dizziness and somnolence compared to immediate-release formulations. It is currently in Phase 1 clinical development.
