Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Brixelle (BX-001N) is a synthetic, self-assembling mono-PEGylated bilirubin-3α nanoparticle developed by Bilix. It is designed to overcome the water-insolubility, instability, and toxicity of free bilirubin while retaining its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Brixelle consists of a synthetic bilirubin core covalently conjugated to polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains, allowing it to self-assemble into uniform nanoparticles in aqueous media. It acts as a reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger and immunomodulator, preferentially accumulating in injured tissues (such as ischemic kidneys) via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. Brixelle is primarily being developed for the prevention and treatment of ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), including cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) and transplantation-related IRI.
