Broccoli sprout extract (BSE) is a natural product preparation rich in glucoraphanin, which is converted into the active isothiocyanate sulforaphane. This specific extract is being investigated by the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins as a chemopreventive agent for women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Sulforaphane acts as a potent inducer of the Nrf2 (Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) signaling pathway, which coordinates the expression of phase II cytoprotective and antioxidant enzymes such as NQO1 and AKR1C1. In clinical studies, the extract is administered orally (often dissolved in mango juice) to evaluate its impact on cellular proliferation markers like Ki67 in breast tissue prior to surgical intervention.
