BSE-SFN is an oral broccoli sprout extract enriched with sulforaphane (SFN), a naturally occurring isothiocyanate small molecule derived from glucoraphanin. Developed for clinical use by researchers at Johns Hopkins University (Talalay et al.) and investigated by Dr. John Kirkwood at the University of Pittsburgh, it is being studied for the chemoprevention of melanoma. The formulation is designed to deliver high concentrations of sulforaphane, which modulates cellular pathways involved in cancer initiation and progression. Its primary mechanism in melanoma prevention involves the inhibition of Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3), which is constitutively active in atypical nevi. It also induces Phase 2 detoxification enzymes, inhibits Phase 1 enzymes, and regulates apoptosis and cell-cycle progression to prevent the transformation of atypical nevi into melanoma.
