Broccoli sprouts are the young, germinated seeds of the broccoli plant (Brassica oleracea), typically harvested 3–5 days after germination. They are a nutrient-dense food source rich in vitamins A, C, and K, minerals such as calcium and iron, fiber, and protein. Broccoli sprouts are especially notable for their extremely high content of glucoraphanin—a precursor to sulforaphane—an isothiocyanate compound with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Upon chewing or digestion, glucoraphanin is converted into sulforaphane by the enzyme myrosinase. Sulforaphane activates the Nrf2 pathway in cells, leading to increased production of antioxidant enzymes (such as glutathione), reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation, modulation of immune responses, enhancement of detoxification processes (notably phase II liver enzymes), improvement in cardiovascular markers (e.g., cholesterol levels), support for gut health via microbiome modulation, and potential anticancer effects through inhibition of carcinogenesis pathways[1][2][3][4][6][7][8]. Broccoli sprouts contain up to 100 times more glucoraphanin/sulforaphane than mature broccoli[1][6]. They have been studied as functional foods for prevention or adjunctive management in conditions such as cancer risk reduction (prostate/bladder/lung/breast), cardiovascular disease prevention/improvement (cholesterol/triglycerides/oxidative stress markers), inflammatory bowel diseases/gut health support, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease improvement via detoxification pathways activation[2][3][4][6]. While widely consumed as a dietary supplement or food ingredient globally due to these bioactive properties[8], there is no conclusive evidence supporting their use for specific medical indications.
