Overview
Brodclav is a combination antibiotic containing amoxicillin, a semisynthetic penicillin-class beta-lactam antibiotic, and clavulanic acid (as potassium clavulanate), a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Amoxicillin works by binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. Clavulanic acid acts as a suicide inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamases, preventing the enzymatic degradation of amoxicillin and restoring its activity against beta-lactamase-producing resistant strains. Brodclav is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and soft tissue infections.
