brodifacoum

Brodifacoum is a highly potent second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide of the 4-hydroxycoumarin class. It acts as a vitamin K antagonist by inhibiting the enzyme vitamin K epoxide reductase, thereby blocking the synthesis of vitamin K–dependent clotting factors (II, VII, IX, and X), leading to uncontrolled bleeding in target organisms. Brodifacoum is characterized by its extremely high toxicity to mammals and birds and an exceptionally long biological half-life (up to nine months in humans), which increases risks of secondary poisoning and environmental persistence. It is used primarily for rodent control but has also been employed against larger pests such as possums[2][6]. Human exposure can result in severe coagulopathy requiring prolonged treatment with vitamin K[2].
