Overview

BromAc is a combination therapeutic consisting of bromelain (a mixture of proteolytic enzymes derived from pineapple stems) and acetylcysteine (a thiol-based antioxidant and mucolytic). Developed by Mucpharm, it was originally designed for the treatment of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) and other mucinous tumors of the appendix and lung. The mechanism involves the synergistic action of bromelain's proteolytic activity and acetylcysteine's ability to reduce disulfide bonds, which together dissolve the dense mucin architecture. In the context of COVID-19, BromAc is delivered via nebulization to act as a potent mucolytic, reducing sticky sputum (MUC5AC) and potentially disrupting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to render the virus non-infective. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by reducing cytokine and chemokine levels.
