Overview

**Bromazepam** is a benzodiazepine medication primarily used for the short-term treatment of severe anxiety and panic disorders. It acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the GABA-A receptor, enhancing the inhibitory effect of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central nervous system, which produces anxiolytic, sedative, hypnotic, and muscle relaxant effects[1][2][5]. It does not possess antidepressant or antipsychotic properties. Developed as part of the classical benzodiazepine class, it has an intermediate onset and duration of action. The drug carries risks typical to benzodiazepines including dependence, withdrawal symptoms with abrupt cessation, and potential for misuse or abuse[2][5]. It is approved in many countries but not in the United States[6].
