Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes derived primarily from the stems of pineapples. It consists mainly of thiol endopeptidases and other components such as phosphatase, glucosidase, peroxidase, cellulase, escharase, and several protease inhibitors[4][5]. Bromelain is promoted as a dietary supplement for various uses including reducing inflammation (such as in sinusitis and osteoarthritis), aiding wound healing (including topical use for burn debridement), improving digestion, and potentially supporting weight loss[1][3][7]. Its mechanism of action involves selective inhibition of proinflammatory prostaglandin biosynthesis; modulation of cytokines; effects on platelet aggregation and fibrin formation; fibrinolytic activity; immune-modulating properties; analgesic effects; and possible anticancer activities through pro-apoptotic mechanisms[4][5][6][8]. Bromelain is considered safe when used appropriately as a supplement or topical agent.
