Overview

Bromelin is a phytotherapeutic combination product developed by researchers at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) for the treatment of acute irritative cough associated with the common cold, specifically in pediatric populations. The formulation consists of an extract from *Ananas comosus* (pineapple), which contains the proteolytic enzyme mixture bromelain, and honey (*Apis mellifera*) as the vehicle. Bromelain is hypothesized to exert mucolytic and anti-inflammatory effects, while honey provides a demulcent effect to soothe the respiratory mucosa. The product was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (NCT01356693) involving children aged 2 to 15 years, where it was compared against a honey-based placebo to assess its efficacy in reducing cough episodes.
