Overview

Bromfenac sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) formulated for ophthalmic use. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of postoperative inflammation and reduction of ocular pain following cataract surgery. The mechanism of action involves inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by blocking cyclooxygenase (COX) 1 and 2 enzymes. This reduces intraocular inflammation by limiting prostaglandin-mediated processes such as vasodilation and increased vascular permeability. Non-ophthalmic formulations were withdrawn in the US due to liver toxicity concerns[1][3][4][5].
