Bromocriptine is a semisynthetic ergot alkaloid derivative and a dopamine D2 receptor agonist. It is primarily used to treat hyperprolactinemia (high prolactin levels), which can cause conditions such as galactorrhea, amenorrhea, and infertility. Bromocriptine is also indicated for the management of Parkinson's disease symptoms, acromegaly (excess growth hormone), and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Its mechanism of action involves stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, particularly inhibiting prolactin secretion from the anterior pituitary gland by acting on lactotrophs. In type 2 diabetes, it acts centrally to reset dopaminergic and sympathetic tone within the central nervous system, improving glucose metabolism[1][3][4][5][6][8].
