Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bromocriptine mesilate is a repurposed small molecule drug originally known as a dopamine D2 receptor agonist used for Parkinson's disease, hyperprolactinemia, acromegaly, and type 2 diabetes. It is being investigated for the treatment of familial Alzheimer's disease carrying presenilin 1 (PSEN1) mutations (PSEN1-AD). Identified through induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-based drug repurposing, bromocriptine mesilate has been shown to reduce the production of amyloid-beta. The drug is developed by Kyoto University, Time Therapeutics, and Towa Pharmaceutical, and is administered orally.
