Bromodeoxyuridine is a synthetic nucleoside analogue of thymidine, commonly used as a marker for cell proliferation in living tissues. It is incorporated into DNA during the S-phase of the cell cycle in place of thymidine, allowing detection of dividing cells using specific antibodies. As an antimetabolite and radiosensitizer, bromodeoxyuridine competes with thymidine for incorporation into DNA, leading to DNA mutation and inhibition of cell proliferation. This mechanism also inhibits repair of radiation-induced DNA double-strand breaks, making it useful in cancer research and therapy as a radiosensitizer. Bromodeoxyuridine has orphan drug status for use in treating primary brain tumors and has been studied as an antiviral and antineoplastic agent[1][2][3][4][8].
