Bromodiphenhydramine (also known as bromazine) is an ethanolamine-class antihistamine and anticholinergic medication. It is a structural analogue of diphenhydramine with a bromine atom substituted on one of the phenyl rings. Bromodiphenhydramine acts primarily as a competitive antagonist at histamine H1 receptor, thereby reducing symptoms caused by histamine release such as those seen in allergies and hay fever. In addition to its antihistaminic effects, it has significant antimuscarinic activity that contributes to marked sedation and antiemetic properties. The drug is used for the control of cutaneous allergies, management of symptoms related to hay fever and other types of allergy, relief from irritant coughs and motion sickness (nausea, vomiting, vertigo), treatment of drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms, and mild cases of Parkinson's disease[1][5][6][7]. Its central antimuscarinic effect likely accounts for its antidyskinetic action.
