Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bronchicum Elixir is a proprietary herbal medicinal product developed by Cassella-med GmbH & Co. KG (a subsidiary of Klosterfrau Healthcare Group) for the treatment of symptoms associated with acute bronchitis and respiratory tract colds accompanied by viscous mucus. It is formulated as an oral solution containing a fixed combination of thyme fluid extract and primrose root fluid extract, with 4.9% ethanol by volume as an excipient. Thyme extract provides spasmolytic, bronchorelaxant, and antimicrobial properties, while primrose root extract acts as a secretolytic agent by reducing the surface tension of alveolar fluid to facilitate expectoration. A Phase 4 open-label, single-group study in Germany evaluated the safety of repeated administration of this ethanol-containing formulation in pediatric patients aged 1–12 years, demonstrating that blood ethanol concentrations remained well below the European Medicines Agency's critical safety threshold of 0.125‰.
