Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bronchipret is a phytotherapeutic (herbal) medicinal product developed by Bionorica SE for the treatment of acute bronchitis and cough associated with excessive mucus production. The formulation typically combines thyme herb extract with either ivy leaf extract (found in the syrup and drops) or primrose root extract (found in the tablet form). Its therapeutic efficacy is attributed to a multi-target mechanism: it acts as a secretolytic by reducing mucus viscosity, a bronchospasmolytic by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle, and exhibits anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Specifically, alpha-hederin from ivy extract has been shown to inhibit the internalization of beta-2 adrenergic receptors, thereby enhancing bronchodilation. Thyme extracts contribute through their essential oils, such as thymol and carvacrol, which provide secretomotor and antibacterial activity. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Bronchipret significantly reduces cough frequency and improves overall symptom scores in patients with respiratory tract infections.
