Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bronchitol is a dry powder formulation of mannitol for oral inhalation. It is indicated as an add-on maintenance therapy to improve pulmonary function in adults 18 years and older with cystic fibrosis who have passed the Bronchitol Tolerance Test. Mannitol acts as an osmotic agent in the airways; when inhaled, it draws water into the airway lumen, hydrating and thinning mucus to facilitate its clearance from the lungs. This mechanism helps improve lung function by making it easier for patients with cystic fibrosis to expectorate thick mucus[1][2][4][5][8]. The drug should not be used in children or adolescents under 18 years old due to insufficient safety and efficacy data[2][3]. The most common side effects include cough, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), throat irritation or pain, vomiting, fever, joint pain, and bacterial presence in sputum[2][3][7].
