Overview

Broncho-Vaxom (OM-85) is an immunomodulatory bacterial lysate composed of lyophilised fractions from 21 inactivated bacterial strains commonly associated with respiratory tract infections (RTIs), including *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, *Haemophilus influenzae*, and *Staphylococcus aureus*. It functions as an oral immunostimulant by activating the innate immune system through Toll-like receptors (TLR2 and TLR4) on dendritic cells and macrophages, which in turn enhances mucosal immunity and modulates adaptive T-cell responses. The drug is primarily indicated for the prevention of recurrent respiratory tract infections and associated symptoms such as wheezing. It is currently being evaluated in the PROTEA trial, a Phase 3 study conducted by Franciscus Gasthuis & Vlietland, to determine its efficacy in reducing lower respiratory tract infections and wheezing in moderate-to-late preterm infants (born at 30-36 weeks gestation) when administered from early infancy through the first year of life.
